Hierarchical structure of Feudal Japan

In Japan, merchants were seen as the lowest class of citizens as they lived off others’ labour. Often they were made to live in separate parts of the village and were not allowed to consort with other classes except when doing business.

Four occupations

The four divisions of society refers to the model of society in ancient China and was a meritocratic social class system in China, and other subsequently influenced Confucian societies. The four castes — gentry, farmers, artisans and merchants — are combined to form the term Shìnónggōngshāng (士農工商). The concept was first brought up in the Confucian classic Spring and Autumn Annals, and was influential in countries with Confusian influence. It has been adapted into Japanese as “Shi,nō,kō,shō” (士農工商)

Agrarianism

Agrarianism is a social and political philosophy which stresses the viewpoint that a rural or semi-rural lifestyle, most especially agricultural pursuits such as farming or ranching, leads to a fuller, happier, cleaner, and more sustainable way of life for both individuals and society as a whole.

Karoushi

Karoushi (過労死), which can be translated literally from Japanese as “death from overwork”, is occupational sudden death. Although this category has a significant count, Japan is one of the few countries that reports it in the statistics as a separate category. The major medical causes of karoushi deaths are heart attack and stroke due to stress.

Parodic crossovers

Often, the problems of bringing together two shows with different narrative ambitions makes the writing of a crossover burdensome. Such difficulties are encountered by situation comedies that wish to crossover with dramatic television programmes. The satirical crossover—ranging in length from a cameo to a full comedy sketch or episode—is an extremely popular way of circumventing this problem. By various means, such crossovers typically avoid outcry from fans by being obvious parody or homage. However, on rare occasion, the humor of such crossovers can be used by one show make a narrative point by capitalizing on the audience’s experience of the other programme.

Local revitalization

Sanriku Railway Co. has hosted a symposium on local revitalization using anime character figurines modeled on female employees from railway companies across Japan.

Tetsudo Musume/鉄道むすめ

The “Tetsudo Musume” (Railway Girls) series, produced by toy manufacturer Tomytec, features female figurines wearing uniforms of local railways around the country.

Red Dawn (2010)

Red Dawn is an upcoming 2010 war film being directed by Dan Bradley based on the 1984 film of the same name. As opposed to a Soviet invasion of the United States homeland as depicted in the original 1984 film, this film’s storyline will be based on a Chinese invasion.

Kodai Shoujo Dogu-chan / The Ancient Dogoo Girl

Idoling!!! member Erika Yazawa is Dogu-chan “an ancient girl who’s revived after 10,000 years to fight evil in modern-day society while capturing the heart of a socially withdrawn teenager named Makoto (Masataka Kubota).” The fantasy/comedy show was conceived by Noboru Iguchi, director of The Machine Girl and RoboGeisha.

Van Gogh Ear Controversy

Vincent van Gogh’s fame may owe as much to a legendary act of self-harm, as it does to his self-portraits. But, 119 years after his death, the tortured post-Impressionist’s bloody ear is at the centre of a new controversy, after two historians suggested that the painter did not hack off his own lobe but was attacked by his friend, the French artist Paul Gauguin.

In Van Gogh’s Ear: Paul Gauguin and the Pact of Silence, published in Germany, Hamburg-based academics Hans Kaufmann and Rita Wildegans argue that the official version of events, based largely on Gauguin’s accounts, contain inconsistencies and that both artists hinted that the truth was more complex.
