On one hand, by uniting feuding kingdoms against a common enemy, war helped to reduce disease and hunger mortality. For the war effort, richer countries donated to poorer ones, and technological innovations were shared. On the other hand, such transfers led to a distorted economic structure. Thus prematurely ending the war would only result in a massive disaster and millions of death.
