Kakumei Cosplay – Our Fabric of Reality

Emporio Ivankov & New Kama Land Party cosplay via MAL’s Russian Animefans

Remember the time when transvestites were flamboyant iconoclasts and extravagant individualists, free of society and of all norms, and not a bunch of giant whiners claiming rights and equality among the carceral society of political correctness ? Oh wait,….. that was in One Piece.

Emporio Ivankov

Emporio Ivankov, or Iva for short, is the “Queen” of the Kamabakka Kingdom, known as a “Miracle Worker”, and is a commander of the Revolutionary Army. He was formerly a prisoner of Impel Down kept, living in a secret “Okama Paradise”, but has since returned to his post as Queen of Kamabakka Kingdom.

New Kama Land

Known as the The “Prisoners’ Secret Flower Garden”, Newkama Land (ニューカマーランド) is a hidden sub level of Freezing Hell, and is where all the prisoners who have been supposedly “demoned away” have gone to. It is ruled by the “Queen” Emporio Ivankov, and it is called the Okama Paradise where all the okama and prisoners party and have fun all the time. However, since the level itself is hidden, the inhabitants seem to abide by very strict rules that prohibit them from actively interacting with the other levels, at least not without covert movement. Still, they don’t seem to discriminate should new arrivals find their way here, as seen by the warm welcome they gave to Bon Kurei.Following the mass breakout of Impel Down, the residents of Newkama Land participated in the Whitebeard War and left for Kamabakka Kingdom, leaving Level 5.5 empty.

Its name is a pun on “new comer” and okama, and refers to the okama who are completely able to change genders thanks to Ivankov’s powers. In Japan, a “New Half” is a man who undergoes a “sex-change” operation.

The Newkama land is a reference to the B-movie Rocky horror picture show, in which main character Frank N. Furter is a transvestite similar to Newkama inhabitants. In the final scene of the movie, the heroes Brad and Janett surrender to their transsexual feelings in a similar way as Ivankov’s candyboys accept their true inner selves

The Rocky horror picture show

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the 1975 film adaptation of the British rock musical stageplay, The Rocky Horror Show, written by Richard O’Brien. The film is a parody of B-movie, science fiction and horror films of the late 1940s through early 1970s. The story narrated the world of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a self-proclaimed “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania.”

Transvestism

Magnus Hirschfeld coined the word transvestism in 1910 (from Latin trans-, “across, over” and vestitus, “dressed”) to refer to the sexual interest in cross-dressing. He used it to describe persons who habitually and voluntarily wore clothes of the opposite sex. Magnus Hirschfeld (May 14, 1868 – May 14, 1935) was a German physician and sexologist. An outspoken advocate for sexual minorities, Hirschfeld founded the Scientific Humanitarian Committee, which Dustin Goltz called “the first advocacy for homosexual and transgender rights.”
