Saving Kamen Rider City Ishinomaki
Before the March 11 mega-earthquake, this northern town’s main claim to fame was its museum that celebrates the works of the late manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori (1938-1988), creator of the popular “Kamen Rider” (Masked Rider) and “Cyborg 009″ series.
But now the tsunami-ravaged town lies in ruins, and the Ishinomori Mangakan museum, which boasts a superb collection of original drawings by the manga creator, is on the verge of collapse.
The tsunami left piles of debris, including a fishing boat, on the bridge leading to the museum. Ishinomori’s manga character figures decorated the main shopping street, but many were damaged and two were swept away by the magnitude-9.0 quake and tsunami.
