Show Your Heart
Singer GACKT is using his influence to help earthquake relief efforts, establishing a new emergency donation fund called “SHOW YOUR HEART.”
A large number of other celebrities have added messages of support on the webpage, including LUNA SEA’s Shinya, h.NAOTO, Fujiwara Norika, Izumiya Shigeru, Nightmare’s Ni~ya, BREAKERZ’s DAIGO, Jinnai Tomonori, Haruna Ai, Koike Eiko, Tamaki Nami, Ohguro Maki, and many more.
The donations, which are being accepted through a Sumitomo Mitsui bank account, will be given to the Japanese Red Cross and prefectural welfare organizations.
Did Your Donation Really Reach Japan? (Probably Not.)
Twitter is full of anxious donors, retweeting to text REDCROSS to 90999 to make $10 donation. Now, there’s nothing wrong with this donation: The American Red Cross is a superb organization. But Japan hasn’t actually asked them for help just yet.
In other words, you may think your money is helping disaster relief in Japan. But from the press releases we’ve seen today, no US-based nonprofits are actually deploying to Japan yet.
From what we can tell, every major relief organization with an American chapter is doing the same thing: raising funds for if and when they’re deployed to Japan or anywhere else affected by the day’s events
So why is everyone asking for money? Natural disasters bring in donations. Hurricane Katrina brought $3.3 billion to date. Haiti has brought in $1.4 billion so far. And when is the best time to ask someone for money? When he can see floods, fires and other devastation on TV.
It’s just important to know, when you’re passionately sending dollars over text messages, where those dollars actually go. All of us want to help Japan right now. But the sad fact of the matter is, we may not be able to.
Charity fraud
Charity fraud is the act of using deception to get money from people who believe they are making donations to charities. Often a person or a group of people will make material representations that they are a charity or part of a charity and ask prospective donors for contributions to the non-existent charity. Charity fraud not only includes fictitious charities but also deceitful business acts. Deceitful business acts include businesses accepting donations and not using the money for its intended purposes.
