The Slow Explosion of Anime Diplomacy
During that stopover (Otakon), I had an all-night talk with several Japanese about the significance of Japan’s cultural diplomacy through pop culture.
We decided we should move forward in some way, pushing beyond our usual boundaries. We agreed that, rather than something grandiose, we should aim for progress that was slow but sure. We believed we could bring about change through a collaboration between the public and private sectors.
With Yamagishi, I started to work on a plan merging anime cultural diplomacy, one of my areas of expertise, and her group’s public relations activities to promote tourism in Japan. The theme became “pilgrimage to the sacred places of anime.”
