Croatian food manufacturer Podravka’s signature product Vegeta, a blend of cooking spices, has an unlikely internet foe : Prince Vegeta, hero of “Dragon Ball,” authored by Akira Toriyama.

But Podravka’s legal advisers are not even thinking of waging a war against the popular character. Dragon Ball does not affect the reputation and the sales of Vegeta,” says Podravka’s spokesperson.

As early as in 1958, a professor named Zlata Bartl made a kind of seasoning called Vegeta at a lab of Prodravka Company in Koprivnica, a charming small town in North Croatia. Vegeta was popular to both chefs and housewives. At that time, there was a catchword about Vegeta when people were cooking: “……and a spoonful of Vegeta“, which could reflect the popularity of it. Nowadays, Vegeta has been used as a seasoning by international gourmet chefs and is sold in 40 countries and regions.

Professor Zlata Bartl, head of the team that at the end of the 1950s in Podravka’s research lab invented Podravka’s most famous product, Vegeta, died in 2008 at the General Hospital in Koprivnica, Croatia, at age 89. Zlata Bartl was born in February 1920 in Dolac near Travnik in Bosnia. This village with 300 residents gave the Nobel Prize winner Ivo Andric, Dr. Jozo Sunaric, Dr. Nikola Mandic, and five Catholic bishop. She finished elementary and grammar school in Sarajevo and in 1938 she enrolled at was then the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. She received many awards of which the most eminent are the high decoration of the President of the Republic of Croatia – the Order of Danica with the image of Nikola Tesla, the award Gold Marten (Zlatna kuna) for Life Time Achievement by the Croatian Chamber of Commerce and Podravka’s Memorial Award for Life Time Achievement in 1987.
