Yoshiyuki Tomino, Japanese creator of the multi-million dollar a year giant robot franchise, Gundam, was in New York for the festival and says he also doesn’t exactly know why there’s a growing American audience that’s looking to Japan for its animation.

It’s a curiousity to me. There is one thing as a Japanese person that strikes my curiousity. What I find particularly curious is that there already exists a medium, the cartoon, which is a western medium, one can even possibly say Judeo-Christian. So why when something already exists in this culture, why do they seek, accept and like so much anime and manga [Japanese comics] which obviously comes from Japan.”

You know, I think coming to NYAF probably answers the question like a resounding gong. Just to give it some context, all sorts of weeaboos and otaku and normal people, fangirls and fanboys of all ages, lined up for some face-to-autograph time with this man.

But he’s lived through a lot, so maybe his perspective as a genuine old man is a lot higher up compared to the average teens to 20something that tend to dominate western anime fandom.

  2. Yoshiyuki Tomino plays here the role of the naive (aka a benevolent troll). He knows the reason, we all know the reason, and there’s nothing to be done. Which is a good thing.
