Träumerei (Dreaming) is part of Kinderszenen (“Scenes From Childhood”), Opus 15, by Robert Schumann, a set of thirteen pieces of music for piano written in 1838. Träumerei is one of Schumann’s best known pieces.
Robert Schumann (1810-1856)
Robert Schumann,(June 8, 1810 – July 29, 1856) was a German composer, aesthete and influential music critic. He is one of the most famous Romantic composers of the 19th century.
Traumerei was what was played across the Soviet Union when Germany surrendered in 1945. It was sort of adopted by the Russian people as sort of a “theme song” for the suffering inflicted on their country during World War II. The suffering continued under the communists, of course. The Soviet Union fell shortly after.
This music is usually performed during the minutes of silence or near the Eternal Flame. (Piskaryov Memorial in St. Peterburg / Mamayev Hill Memorial in Volgograd (Stalingrad))
