In this post, we’ll learn the Edo Period :

Regardless of how badly you flunked Japanese History, you at least know this is the Edo Period, right, Toki ?

Thanks to 250 years of Tokugawa rule, it’s said to be a time of peace, when even the commoners were happy.

And then came the black ships with their cannons and foreigners, bringing a whole different culture with them.

Some people accepted them, and some didn’t.

Either because of the long peace, or in reaction to the intruders, this country is now at war with itself.

Public safety is deteriorating, and crime has suddenly started to increase.

So, up to this point, it’s a city of the Edo Period, just like in the history lessons.

The Tokugawa era started out as an age of the Warrior Caste. It wasn’t a bad time, you could still speak of a decent traditional society living according to Natural Order, silver if not gold. The centuries of peace corrupted the leading castes though. Only the first 3 or so generations of the Tokugawa era were still worthy of their titles, it all deteriorated after that.

The black ships were always coming in and out of Japan, what got them to stay halfway the 19th century however was Japan’s own corrupted leaders. The Japanese golden and silver age came to an end centuries after the West, but even they could not be spared from decadence and decay.

    Time for a new renaissance!
